Developing an Effective Brochure: A Checklist

Your prospects are flooded with brochures, from you, your competitors, for services you don't even offer. How do you create a brochure that stands above and helps move the sales process along? Here's a checklist of questions to guide you there.

What really sells your prospects and customers?

  • Is it stories of satisfied customers?
  • Is it pictures of your service?
  • It is a personal sales process?
  • Can you represent this selling moment in a brochure?
  • Is a brochure the right vehicle for this information?

How will you get the brochure into the right hands?

  • Do you have a consistent process for bringing in new leads and prospects?
  • How will you present the brochure? In person? In the mail? In a sales kit? Alone?
  • During what stage of the sales process will you use the brochure?

Does the brochure help prospects and customers make a decision about using your company?

  • Will the brochure focus on the needs of one person the in the decision making process? Or all those who influence the buying decision?
  • Does the brochure or accompanying sales information answer common questions?
  • Does it give enough information for the reader to take the next step in the buying process?
  • Does it tell them what the next step in the process is, and ask them to take it?

Is the brochure worth keeping?

  • Does the brochure have information that can be used as a reference?
  • Is it unusual in shape, structure, design or type?
  • Is the design engaging and easy to follow?
  • Is the copy reader-centric and relevant to the decision making process?
  • Does the production quality make it seem worthy of keeping?

Does the brochure enhance your brand?

  • Do the images and information match how your company wants to be perceived in the marketplace?
  • Does the overall design look like your other marketing materials?
  • Does the messaging of the brochure match the messaging of the company?
