Starting an Email Marketing Program: A Checklist

How do you use email to connect with the right audience and grow your business? It starts with asking yourself the right questions. Have you clearly defined your goals for email marketing?

  • Does the format and content of the proposed email marketing program help you reach your specific goals?

Do you know which audiences will best help you reach your goals?

  • Are they a segment of your existing customers?
  • Are they a totally new audience?
  • Do you have access to them? If not, how will you reach them?

Are you filling your list with people who want to be there?

  • Have you developed an opt-in system?
  • When using a list from someone else, is it well targeted? Is the target audience the same as yours?
  • Have you reduced reliance on sweepstakes and giveaways in favor of methods that bring in people more receptive to your message?
  • Have you considered PR and website promotion, such as releasing a white paper or a study to build your list?

How will you keep people interested in staying on your list?

  • Are you consistently developing relevant, useful or entertaining content?
  • Will you regularly survey your list to find out who they are and what they are interested in?
  • Are you tracking their interests and click throughs?
  • How will you determine the right balance for email frequency, not too few emails and not too many?

How will you build and maintain you company's relationship with people on your list?

  • Does your program encourage readers to communicate and/or interact with your company and its people?
  • Do you have a system in place to respond quickly to recipients' comments and questions?
  • Does the format and content of the email program follow your branding or how you want to be seen in the marketplace?
