Beyond Email: RSS Feeds for Small and Mid-sized Business
      Part 1

The speed and low cost of email marketing with a 100% delivery rate. Welcome to the world of RSS, widely used by media companies and increasingly by corporations. Find out the benefits of RSS for small to mid-sized businesses - and how to reap them to stretch your marketing budget, increase web traffic and boost sales.

What is RSS?

RSS or Really Simple Syndication is an additional way of delivering your content to targeted audiences. Instead of receiving an email or seeking out content on a website, readers can subscribe or search for feeds on topics of interest. They receive these feeds using an RSS reader, also known as an RSS aggregator. Popular RSS readers are provided by Yahoo!, My MSN and the new web browser Firefox.

Feeds are often headlines and descriptions that link back to a website containing the full content. So a popular feed will bring new visitors to your website and boost your natural listings in search engines.

The catch? Most Internet users don't yet know what RSS is. But many of them are still using it.

The average Internet user knows RSS by personalized homepages that deliver news headlines and other regularly updated content. In fact, a Yahoo! RSS study found that 27 percent of internet users access RSS feeds without realizing they are using RSS.

Right now 4 percent of Internet users knowingly use RSS feeds. These techno-savvy users are often male, affluent and educated. Other studies have shown early adopters include journalists, analysts and bloggers.

The next section will discuss whether you need RSS in your marketing mix, and how to use it effectively.
